MOVEMENT IN & AS SYSTEMIC PRACTICE

The theme for this year’s conference is Movement in and as Systemic Practice. As systemic thinkers, practitioners, trainees, supervisors, writers, researchers, we are always moving - and at many levels, meta and micro, inner and outer, across culture and risk. Frequently, we focus on talk, on activity but not so much on the embodied coordinations in our breathing, shifting position, gestures. We can appear still in chaos while inwardly, we may be thinking fast, trying to make sense of a range of feelings. Listening to our bodies, studying how we think-move-feel may be part of everyday reflexivity but how do we make space to learn about inner and out relational coordinations beyond the spoken word?

This connects with how different embodied knowledges channel cultural heritage. Movement does not take place outside of power relations. If we want to decolonise our practice relationships, we can also be curious about what movements are required by whom and how and which are considered "unprofessional". How do we culturally foreground (Hipplewith, 2023) ourselves with self and Others? Are there particular movements in particular spaces within particular structures that are sanctioned or outlawed? How does your place of work organise or dictate what inner or outer movements are possible, desirable, professional or not? We will hear stories of movement-in-place such as in forensic settings, care homes, community spaces, inpatient wards, traditional clinics or consulting room, or therapy outdoors? What is it that makes for the différance (Derrida, 1968) in how we account for, include, and relate to movements as/in our practice?

In this 9th edition of the International Systemic Practice and Research School, we are taking the time to be with/in movement in multiple ways. Together, we can explore the fluidity, drama, and emotion of the relational movements of our bodies, minds and spirit that transcend how we inhabit our past, present, and future.

WORKSHOPS

We will connect through activities, allowing space for cultural foregrounding (Hipplewith, 2023) and renegotiating old and new systemic ways of thinking and doing with each other, linguistically through activities.

We plan to run parallel sessions to stimulate and explore Movement in/as Systemic Practice.

  • Cross-cultural talk through poetry in therapy
  • Using movement in systemic therapy
  • Weaving Theory and Practice as Fluid Transmaterial Worlding
  • Taking systemic practice into nature
